I'll just echo Justin an turbocon. I've been to a few of these auctions and they have all let you start the car and put it in gear. A couple have actually had enthusiast volunteers who had fiddled with the cars a bit and can tell you a bit more about how they run. No test drives, so the transmission especially is a bit of a gamble. Most cars I've seen mostly just seemed like upper middle class family third cars that got to the point of not being worth anything at trade. Most owners of complete junkers are in a financial situation where a tax break doesn't mean anything and they need whatever cash they can get from the car. The Saab guy was possibly just insulted at a three digit trade offer and donated it instead. But it is a gamble. The auctions are usually a fun was to spend a weekend morning checking out some interesting cars and the even more interesting people that attend, so I'd say at least go.
