"M+S" means mud and snow, not rain. Some design aspects of tires that can make them good in mud and snow will help in the rain, but others make things worse.
But before even going there... how old and worn are the tires? Tires tend to harden with age and won't grip wet pavement as well. And as the tread wears, tires will be much more prone to hydroplaning.
So if the tires are more than a few years old and/or worn, that could be your explanation.
Another possibility is that the performance of tires in general has improved over time... maybe you and your wife have become accustomed to better tires and the ones on the Toyota just seem worse by comparison?
