A work and business question. Input needed!

I have a new job in which I will be replacing someone who has spent 12 years in the role that I will be taking over. I don't know the guy at all and will have to work with him briefly which has the potential to be somewhat uncomfortable. During some of the transition I'll be working remotely (I'm ~300 miles away) and not in the office with him, which may or may not be a good thing. I'm good at being diplomatic, respectful and courteous, am impervious to hostility, don't take much personally, but this will still be a bit weird.
The backstory is that the guy couldn't/wouldn't up his game to meet the needs of the company. And he lacked some skills that I bring to the party. This is bound to add to any bad feelings.
Then there's me. I've been working for myself for 17 years. I took the job because it's a great opportunity and is something I want to do. But it means I have to work in a corporate culture again. So that is a bit of unfamiliar territory for me.
SO... does anyone in the Saabnet brain trust have any suggestions or recommendations for how I should make this be as painless as possible and keep people's comfort zones under control?
Thanks, all.
