Talk to the guy commiserate, then offer to come in to meet him for the day, take him out lunch and try to establish a personal connection. It might be just the sort of gesture that wins this guy over to actually caring whether you succeed or not. He's certainly not feeling like the company respects his expertise, so perhaps a tangible demonstration that you do will mean something to him. Best case scenario, it establishes a connection that might form the basis for the miscellaneous question or two even after the 12 day transition.

If he doesn't sound like he's the type who can get over his termination and isn't going to do much for you no matter what, it is probably not worth it. But if he's a professional, he will realize that you are really making an effort and the drive time might pay off. Besides, it it's just 8 hours in a Saab; it will at lest be comfortable and perhaps fun.
