The 2.0 in the 9-3SS is accessible from above, no mess at all. The "nut" on the cover does require the right tool. For me, that's a 1-1/4" (IIRC) socket. "Spin Off" filters oftentimes do not easily spin off. (Not so much on the 9-5, other cars in the past). They've given me much more problems than my cartridge experiences.
It is terribly wasteful throwing an used spin-on in the trash, but most people don't understand the concept of waste. Right or wrong, I let my spin-ons drain for a few weeks, then throw in my metal scrap.
