"If you think that just back in the mid 1400s it was common knowledge the world was flat"
This is a commonly held belief, but it's not true. The earliest record of the theory of a spherical earth is from around the 6th century BCE. By the third century BCE, it was almost universally accepted as true by the educated class. Not only that, we had a pretty good estimate of the size of the earth around that time as well (off by about 10%) using lengths of shadows and trigonometry. Sure, there would have been peasants that weren't privy to this knowledge, but that's merely a measure of how our social class system has changed than how "smart" we've gotten. Heck, there are people today who still think the earth is flat. It's "common knowledge" to the average person today that objects don't shrink when in motion, and that time doesn't pass slower in your basement than it does on the roof of your house, however we proved that both of those are the case almost a hundred years ago.
