Billions and Billions... Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Wed, 26 Feb 2014 17:11:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I wrote this as my Facebook status a few moments ago... pick away...
It all started when I read this article on CNN about Nasa discovering 715 new planets: http://www.cnn.com/2014/02/26/tech/innovation/nasa-new-planets/index.html

"As of February 2014, Kepler had found 961 confirmed exoplanets in more than 76 stellar systems, along with a further 3,601 unconfirmed planet candidates.[14][15] In November 2013, astronomers reported, based on Kepler space mission data, that there could be as many as 40 billion Earth-sized planets orbiting in the habitable zones of sun-like stars and red dwarf stars within the Milky Way Galaxy.[16][17][18] 11 billion of these estimated planets may be orbiting sun-like stars.[19] The nearest such planet may be 12 light-years away, according to the scientists.[16][17]"
This is from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kepler_%28spacecraft%29
Okay, so if we just say 1% of what they think may be orbiting sun-like stars in the habitable zone in our galaxy alone and a recent German super-computer simulation estimates there may be as many as 500 billion galaxies in the universe (many older than the Milky Way)... That means if we're off by a margin of 99%, we still end up with 55,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets around sun-like stars in the habitable zone. Jeez, if we're only off by 50%, then that's 2,750,000,000,000,000,000,000 earth-sized planets orbiting sun-like stars in the habitable zone in our universe... If we're even close, it would be around 5,500,000,000,000,000,000,000 earth-sized planets orbiting around sun-like planets in the habitable zone.
Yes, that would be five thousand five hundred billion billion earth-sized planets orbiting sun-like stars in the habitable zone in our universe.
That leaves me with one troubling conclusion and one question.
Conclusion: All I can decipher from this is that the chance of sentient life evolving in our universe is at least 1 out 5.5e21.
Question: How many universes are there?
