I have a couple c900's also and I do not use synthetic in those. Some do, but probably not 0W40.

The 0W40 is for the newer turbocharged saabs, specifically the 2.3L 9-5, which are very hard on oil. There are a variety of reasons for this - some bad pcv designs, a catalytic converter pretty much under the oil pan, extra fine screen to protect a more fragile oil pump etc. Anyway, the solution seems to be short (<5k) fully synthetic oil changes, and Mobil1 0W40 was the recommended oil from SAAB.

Nothing to worry about in the c900... even at 20-30 years old they are (mostly) way cheaper to maintain! 10w30 or 5w30 castrol every 3k in mine.
