Installing a heavier spring may cause wear due to higher contact forces. The edges of the "dent" the detent plunger goes into would be subject to increased wear and rounding over, reducing the torque to break out of the detent. Also other sliding surfaces with increased pressure against them are subject to increased wear. Been there.
Would expect the good versus bad switch detent could be felt when comparing switches with stronger an weaker springs.
