Get a bill of sale form from the DMV. When your selling the car fill out the bill of sale sign the title give both to the new owner (make a copy if you want, not nessesary)collect the money and tell them to get their car off your property.
Buying the car fill out a bill of sale have them sign the bill of sale and the title, give them the money take signed title, bill of sale and your car go to the DMV get a new title in your name.
(You don't need to take the new/used car to the DMV, just bill of sale and title)
As for the funds say money order or cash only, most likely they will bring a money order if its any large amount. The money order concept is the same as if you were holding cash.
As for tags, get the vin of your car. Call your insurance add the car to your policy bring the info to the DMV with signed title & bill of sale to get a temp tag. Most people will just tow the car to their house and deal with the tag issue on a later date. Reason for towing it is because once you or them signed the title & bill of sale the other guy now owns the car, and one can't get a temp tag until they get to the DMV. So your or their new car will be now sitting on the other guys property. To Imidiatly remove the car rent a tow dolly from u-haul and bring the car home.
In selling the car its up to you if you'll let the other guy leave his now new car on your property until he can get to the DMV to get a temp tag. Which may take up to a week or longer becouse the guy is a procrastinator.
I inform them before the sale to make arrangements to remove the car when they come get the title (when money exchanges hands) its a nice way of saying bring a tow truck, tow dolly, or drive it away with no plate because they live a block away & (of course when I'm not looking)
In Florida the plate belongs to the old owner while in Minnesota the plate stays with the car. You'll have to find out which kind of state you live in from the DMV, and follow their steps.
My bro once bought a vehicle up in pa and lived in fl at the time. He told the guy to park the truck in long term parking at the airport leave the airport parking stub locked in the truck & take his tag. mail the title, a signed bill of sale & the key to fla. went to the Dmv got a temp tag flew to the airport and slapped the tag on and drove it home. (This was an e-bay purchase transfer of fund was pay-pal)
