Compared to a Smart I prefer the Elio, at least the Elio looks fun.. convertible option would be nice. It is not so much of a parts savings as a lighter (less capacity) shape, think triangle vs square.. you strip off all that unneeded space and weight (passenger and trunk). The Elio could be built just as well with four wheels but you then lose some of the benefit of being in the 3 wheel class. Still I am concerned how much vehicle 6k buys, you can barely buy a good motorcycle for that money (Honda CTX700 is over 7k)
The main point in favor for a 3-wheeler is that in some locations they are considered motorcycles and cost less to register and insure (maybe). The big minuses have always been somewhat less stability, smaller capacity and missing out on all the great buy 3 get one free tire sales...;-)
