The Mercedes cars from around 2000 were not great - certainly not as well built as the Mercedes of legend (70's, 80's, 90's)... Possibly the newer Mercs have turned the corner and are better once again, though we won't really know for a while.
The newer BMWs are not simple, but I didn't realize they were so costly to keep up (ok, I had heard about the cost of changing a battery). I have a friend who just dumped a recent X3. Not sure why. I will ask next time I see him. It had replaced an A4 (the Audi was due for costly maintenance). For most euro brands, attention to care and feeding pays off. One can't weld the hood shut like on a Toyota or Honda, but they are all much more interesting to drive than a Toyota or Honda (which to me is more valuable).
If the SAAB is in good shape (especially not rusting), and the OP either has a good Saab tech around or can DIY, it will probably be not too hard to keep on the road for a number of years. They are quite practical and fun.
