It depends to a degree on what style of house you have.
But here's what I did a while back when I was having a semi-custom house built. The house had 2 stories plus a basement and an attic. In about 5 different points around the house, I had (plastic) conduit run from the basement to the attic, and on each floor there were boxes (the conduit was connected to the top & bottom of each box so in effect went "through" the boxes) that once the wall was finished, were covered with plates. If I wanted to run anything low-voltage to any of the rooms with the boxes (which was just about all of them), I could easily pull through the conduit from either the basement or the attic, then install one or more jacks in place of the plate. The double-width boxes could accommodate plates with up to 6 jacks. Plus of course if a wire needed to be run between the basement and attic, that was easy too. I don't remember the conduit size but I think it was 2".
