Congrats on the roadside repair. I remember an old episode of Seinfeld where Jerry exclaimed, 'why do guys always open the hood when a car breaks down, are they hoping to find a big button that says 'fix engine' under there?" Fortunately in your case it actually was something somewhat obvious (at least for a car enthusiast).
This is a really good lesson about carrying even the most basic set of tools in your car though (as well as a safety triangle or flares in case it's not an easy fix). If I had a dollar for every crazy roadside repair I've been involved with when I was a bit younger, and the wacky interactions with strangers that resulted, I'd have, well, several dollars.
