Dealers are funny. Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Mon, 22 Sep 2014 09:45:39 In Reply to: Re: It depends..., A1-turbo, Sun, 21 Sep 2014 08:43:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For the last few SAABs we bought, the dealers did a pretty bad job of hiding the original owner. In all 3 cases, info was left in the glove box. For one, when I asked if it was possible to get records, they cited "privacy laws" as a reason not to (this was a SAAB dealership trade in that would have had records). When I pointed out that the guy had a few things done - the receipts were in the glove box, and pointed out that the PO had bought the car for less than they took it as a trade in (also in the glove box!) - they said (with a sheepish face) that I could not have those papers. Ha! We got a pretty good deal on that one... They also read off the guys repair history without printing or disclosing anything confidential... fortunately he had fixed almost all the key stuff that breaks at that mileage (and the car has been rock solid, low maintenance). It seems dealers want to bury any history (maybe to pretend all examples are equally good), whereas a good history is valuable to some of us... I guess it's part of keeping the upper hand in that cherries vs lemons thing...
Anyway, I have/had (probably out of date) contact info for all 3. I never contacted them since I did not feel that it was considerate, though, it would have been nice to have had more records...
This situation is different though, and I agree with Chaz - he sold the car, it's a fairly new car so there are many still like it to buy. The new owner could have messed it up already. I would not try to track him down. Very unlikely to be a positive experience (whereas if a guy called me asking about a car I owned that he bought, I'd probably be pretty happy to tell him a bit about it - it would be creepy if a PO called me up asking about his old car)... well that's just my opinion anyway!
