I think GM deserves less credit here. It is true that SAAB was involved in improving the GM global engine platforms to accommodate turbo charging... but companies like Hyundai were probably doing as much or more sooner than GM with turbos in the marketplace. I do think though that they looked very strongly at what SAAB was doing. The earlier Sonata with 2.0T to me was influenced heavily by the 9-5, they had a GT Elantra I think that looked much like a og9-3 (but without turbo), and newer concept cars from Kia and Hyundai have been pretty much ripoffs of the 9X concept. Lots of other brands had turbos also (eg VW/Audi, Volvo), but now we are also seeing some of the stalwarts (eg BMW) change their tune.
In short, the whole world was watching, and I think SAAB had a big influence - even outside of GM!
