my father had a device that hooked into the house AC to dump waste heat into the hot water tank. Saved a lot of money in comparison to heating water the traditional way. He was in southern FL where, of course, the A/C is going 49 weeks a year.
I've been looking for something similar but haven't found it yet.
That said, I like the idea of the heat pump as a supplement for hot water.
Here in ATL, we've found that it's an advantage to have gas for hot water when an ice storm comes through and power goes out for a week. A hot shower becomes a well-appreciated luxury when it's 40 in the house.
