I've read that a heat pump can't make hot water as quickly as a resistance heater or gas heater so it will go back to resistance once you use up the water in the tank. I guess it depends on whether you use a lot of hot water in a short time or a little at a time. The incoming water gets pretty cold in the winter also, requiring more BTUs to heat, again if you need a lot in a short time, like two showers. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Why not a gas water heater? I find it costs less than $20 a month to heat water with gas in PA.
