Not sure how much a boost going from 4GB to 6GB ram will give, but bang for the buck that is where I'd start. Another option is to buy a used/refurbished model or two newer iMac
For the memory when I upgraded a 2001 iBook G3 in 2009 from 128MB to 640MB ram it took a machine that was practically useless on the web to very functional. Don't really know how it is now as a year or so later we replaced it with a unibody iMac. The iBook doesn't have wifi & don't have a good place to set it up where I can plug it in.
Usually the only time of year to get a deal on new Apples is Day After Thanksgiving, which is coming up. So if you skip this years and a small upgrade or two gets you to the next years or a later years, go for it.
