My input:
Volvo C30 is my favorite in the "looks" department (as a fellow 1800 owner, we both know why). They were very expensive cars for their class when new, probably still are. I drove one and thought that my 9000 was faster, but that may be because the C30 was smoother. In my opinion, the build quality is higher than the others on your list.
Early year MiniCoopers are not known for reliability - don't know if this improved at all. A neighbor had one and I was amazed at some of the stuff that would generically wear out (rear wheel bearings) and the online complaints about transmissions and engines self-destructing (I looked into getting one at one point). Also, they came with hideous run-flat tires that give a jostling ride and are terrible in inclement weather. Perhaps real tires would improve things significantly - did so on a relative's BMW that came with run-flat tires. Since Minis are so popular and the design stayed the same, they have maintained a large percentage of their value - which makes buying a used one less of a good prospect.
Saabarus share the thin sheet metal and cheap interiors of their Subaru brothers (neighbor had one, quite dented up). I couldn't imagine driving one for 20 years in the Midwest (not that doing so is your intention).
VW GTI - I had enough maintenance headaches with my last Audi A6 to sour me on VW products for the foreseeable future.
