Did you have that cable hooked up to a car battery on the other end?
It happens, I guess.
A couple (more) of years back, when all laptops were still chunky and heavy, my friend's no-name laptop started melting from overuse.
FYI, the hard drive can be taken out of the laptop and used as an external drive for any computer. Unless the HD was fried somehow.
