I used to play the frequent flyer and hotel points game extensively and had, at one point, almost 700K miles in the bank on a few airlines. Was able to take the family to the Caribbean twice, Hawaii once, and Europe twice. Now, I've dialed that way back since most airlines treat you like trash and my loyalty to a particular airline is gone as a response.
But! If you can suck up an airline card or two, I got the American Airlines card last year because I was doing a lot of personal travel from LAX to Boston and I now have about 55K miles with them. First bag free, priority boarding, etc. I also took a r/t from Long Beach to Boston on US Airways in early-December and they offered me 50K miles if I signed up for their c/c.
To make a long story almost short, US Air and American are combining their FF programs in the 2nd qtr of 2015 so that 55K miles on American and that 50K miles from US Airways will get me over 100K miles combined in American's program and for some reason AA has had 25K mile r/t frequent flyer tickets to the Caribbean for about six weeks every Fall for years. Took the family to Curacao twice doing that. As such, I'm looking at taking the family to some other island later this year. Except for that funky little mileage sale deal, I find that airline cards are simply not worth having.
Have no idea if these cards will work with a Canadian address.
FWIW, as a shameless plug, I flew JetBlue from BOS-LAX last Monday night (1/12) and the plane was 20% full. Had an entire row to myself complete with three seat backs of Direct TV. Doing the same next Tuesday night from BOS-LAX and the plane right now seems similarly empty. Kinda like my own NetJet. In other news, I'm flying American to Boston on Saturday and they've graciously assigned me a middle seat at the back of the plane. I can't wait, etc.
