The United MileagePlus card is pretty darned good if you're mainly a United flyer. You get good signing bonus of miles, preferred boarding (I am a big fan of this), and one free checked back. If you check 4 bags in a year, you've covered your annual fee. You also get a few other things like 2 free united club passes/year.
I've now moved to a city that isn't a United hub so I've transitioned over to the Chase Sapphire preferred. You get 1:1 miles transfers to United and Southwest w/o a penalty plus a few extra percs. No priority boarding, however. It is a more flexible card than the United MileagePlus card.
