Hmmm you made me look at the forecast for tormorrow... that must be going just south of us - only a few inches forecast here but it's fairly chilly out, -30 with the wind...
The difference with those noreasters in Maine and whatnot is the amount of wind and moisture pulled in off the ocean. Doesn't always mean a ton of snow if there is rain and ice pellets mixed in. I guess the great lakes pull off moisture also but the Atlantic is huge and there are some pretty big temperature gradients in that water not too far offshore...
Good snow tires make a huge difference. AWD (though useful) doesn't help you stop.
