This is absolutely not true for Yelp. My business has 27 reviews listed on Yelp and a five-star average - we have not written or paid for any of them, nor paid Yelp anything despite their constant solicitation to advertise on their site to improve our search ranking. The single one-star review that we received went on for a page and a half of rambling text - this was on our listing for about a year but eventually disappeared; Yelp "filtered" it as apparently the work of someone with issues other than their dissatisfaction with a business transaction. No, we didn't pay for that one either.
Note that people have a natural tendency to complain about problems vs. complement a vendor online. We're proud of our Yelp rating and it has helped generate additional local business. Note sure if there is an equivalent for online businesses.
