Well, I don't gamble because I work too hard for my money to throw it away on a game of chance or the vagueries of sports or animal performance.
That being said, people typically factor in the points spread before placing a bet. A team that is considered superior to its opponent will spot the team a certain number of points. If the SeaHawks play a last place team, the last place team from a 'spread' standpoint may be spotted 13 points. In other words, if you take the SeaHawks to 'win' then they must beat the other team by 14 points for you to win.
Or the odds that your team will succeed will be made astronomical. For example, the odds of the San Francisco Giants winning the World Series this year are much higher than, say, the Houston Astros. The Giants may be 2-1 odds to win whereas the Astros may be 200-1. Put $10 on the Giants in March and you'll collect $20 in October; do the same with the Astros and you'll collect $2000.
You may love your team but you probably love winning money more so betting on your team no matter what out of loyalty is rarely done I suspect.
In any event, I learned early in life that this was foolish because my parents had to help support my aunt and her family because my uncle by marriage usually blew his paycheck betting on the horses and the dogs. No way to live, etc.
