The oldest son and his wife live in Alexandria VA, just 1-1/2 blocks from a Metro Station. He can walk to work on good weather days and takes the Metro when weather is lousy. She takes the Metro almost every day.
They leased a Hyundai Sonata in July of 2012 for 3 years. He called me today and said the car has less than 11,000 miles on it. Most of the miles coming from drives to visit us in Michigan, our daughter-in-law's siblings in Boston area, or their Law School friends who all seem to be in Georgia or Florida.
They are looking at a low mileage used 2012 VW Bug with CPO to purchase before their lease is up. Payments will be cheaper than the monthly lease payment and it should last them for more than a decade with their limited driving.
I could probably do the same if we had ready access to quality public transportation. The local bus route just added a stop at the entrance to our subdivision so access to some things is now feasible and easy without a car. Other destinations will require multiple transfers.
