I just had the same conversation a few weeks ago. A guy I know has a bunch of old Mercedes - he really like the coupes and convertibles but has a pair of W108s (280SE and a 300SEL). I've driven both, and while they are nice cars they don't have ANYTHING on my '67 Fleetwood. The Fleetwood does pretty much everything better than the Benzes except fit into parking spaces - even its fuel economy comparable to the 6.3l. If Detroit hadn't so utterly lost their way in the '70s and turned people off from that style of car, the European sport sedans of the '80s never would have had the impact they did. I'd take my '60s Cadillac over a '60s Benz any day of the week, but the same couldn't be said in the '80s. The worst Benz was still good competition for the best Cadillac by then.
Modern Cadillacs seem to be attacking Mercedes on their own turf, so I'm happy to see Lincoln try a different approach. I think there is a market for a car that's just really nice, even if it won't win races. Actually, that seems to be *exactly* what the new Chrysler 200 is all about, and it's selling pretty well by all accounts.
