On hilly interstates where trucks may not want to keep the same
speed up and down hills (to save gas?) then my theory is stay
in the middle lane and let them have the right lane (provided
there are 3 lanes).
Overall my theory is to stay in the left-but-one lane but pick up
the gap to the traffic in front, unless they're really slow, in which
case go around briskly on the left. Also don't block things even if
there is an idiot in the left lane matching your speed.
My mother, a very good driver actually, said succinctly "don't cause
other people to have to slow down". She was a good shot too. I miss
her still 20-odd years on.
