1) Sign up now to be a member of Avis, Hertz, and/or National. You will avoid all lines when renting a car. I had forgotten how convenient this was until I had to rent a car for my son's wedding and the low cost local company he had pre-arranged rates with in Miami had no such features. Even in this computer age it is a wasted 45 minutes per customer for eveyone who rents at the counter! If you are number 3 in line you will be waiting for over an hour. In contrast, the free Club Membership often allows you to walk up to any car in the row and drive away. Present your membership card and credit card at the exit booth, they scan both and hand you a local map, then you are on your way. This convenience completely freaked out my youngest son's girlfriend when we all arrived nearly simultaneously at Sea-Tac from different parts of the country for a Niece's wedding. We walked to the National lot, selected a mini-van, loaded out luggage, and drove to the exit. I hear a worried voice from the back seat "Roger, don't you have to pay to rent this car before you take it?" If it had been Avis there would have been a large placard on the dash identifying which car had been assigned to me but National lets the customer select brand, model, and color available in their 'Emerald Aisle' within the price range/vehicle category you reserve on-line.
2) Look for local hotels who have rental counters and make your reservation on-line. Lower rates due to reduced tax surchages, no congestion, and more convenient. Airport rental offices are truly set up only for customers who arrive via shuttle bus from the terminal. There may be no place for your family member to safely stop and discharge you to walk to the car agency building.
