This is a purely greed-driven power play. The automakers are trying to use the logic of software companies, that one only licenses the software. (And why I tend to use software until there is really good reason to upgrade.)
Problem is, a car or truck is a LOT more than software and electronics. I can see automakers having some legal success in blocking access to the software/firmware and computers, but not the rest of the vehicle. The impact on customers and the repair/service/tuning industry is just too broad. Indy shops already hate the way automakers lock up the code for much of the software/ firmware/computers.
But the other side is that the automakers don't have anywhere near the capacity to service every vehicle on the road, once a vehicle is out of warranty.
As for me, all the more reason to drive older cars.
