I'd be nervous about the porosity and special cleaning precautions that come with travertine flooring; just not for me.
I know some people can be put off by "faux" things, but I recently put that wood look porcelain tile in my bathroom and am very happy with it. I had my contractor do a random offset rather than the typical 1/2 or 1/3 stagger. Higher quality tile suppliers will have 6-12 different patterns so you minimize the risk of seeing repetition. Used black epoxy grout so there's no water absorption and hopefully no staining.
I laid a few loose tiles in the kitchen and they looked really sharp. Looking forward to using a similar product if we ever gut the kitchen in this house. I put floor warming in the bathroom which is fantastic. If I were doing a larger area I may try to pick locations where you'd stand often and heat those, like in front of the sink or main prep area of a kitchen.
