I have a 2000 Viggen that I have now spent more money on than I paid for it. Having said that, it did actually go for over 2.5 years without a Check Engine light.
Here's the thing: My trusted and adored mechanic died in Feb, while the car was in his shop, leaving me scrambling to find a new mechanic and then stranded out of state for 5 weeks. I do not work on my car at all...couldn't even change the oil. I do like the guys I found, but after a $4000 spring update, the brake booster vacuum hose bushing developed a leak. Changing the bushing probably meant breaking the line which is not made anymore. I spent quite awhile looking to no avail. It was a double whammy...my trusted mechanic dying and then being held hostage to a $12 part after that much laid out. AND there is NO Saab mechanic close to where I live.
It's hard to imagine anything that needs to be done on the car at this point, however, if something does have to be done, there's nowhere I can even have it towed to. And all the logistical hassles that entails.
So my question becomes, do I buy a new car or just keep babying the Viggen? It would be nice not to worry about issues, but I can't even find a new car that could possibly be as much fun to drive and still have the space a hatchback has. I live up a curvy mountain and it is so great to drive the Viggen up and down that road. I love the confidence the Viggen offers me in terms of passing or taking off or hugging a curve, etc. I had a 900 that I loved, but the reasons were far more practical. I don't think I've ever driven my Viggen without consciously thinking about how much I love driving this car. I do use my Nissan Frontier truck for most daily driving, but use the Viggen for anything over 25 miles for the most part.
Anyone have any alternative ideas to cars that could even replace a Viggen? Audi Q5..so pricey and relatively lame MPG. BMW 1 maybe appealing. Love the look of the Nissan Juke, but HP lame. The price of something that could replace my Viggen seems so ridiculous...could put the $$ into buying land instead. If I keep it, then I would think about updating some trim and touching up 2 small hail dents, replace front bumper due to some cracks (still hate how low it is, but goes with the package), etc. So my debate goes on an on. Anyone else in the same boat? Or does everyone on here have the ability to work on their own cars?
