Olds, Chevy, IH, Porsche and BMW all beat Saab to the turbo punch. Saab typically gets credit for using turbos to boost midrange torque instead of ultimate power, which was definitely bucking the trend and more inline with what folks do today. But, there is no defensible way to give them credit for turbos in passenger cars - the Corvair wins that distinction. And Saab only barely wins the midrange torque honor, because Audi did the same in '79 with their inline five in the 200.
Personally, I think the glory of Saab's turbos lies either in their commitment over three decades or APC. Not giving up on a great technology when pretty much nobody else thought it was worth the trouble is awesome. Electronically controlled boost pressure in '82 was simultaneously quiet and earth shattering. It took another ten years before anyone had anything that did what APC did, and moreover APC showed people how to make turbos useful and reliable in a variety of circumstances. Putting high-boost turbos in passenger cars than can run on low octane gas opened the doors for *everyone*.
