OK, so my title could have been less dramatic Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 24 Jun 2015 18:09:14 In Reply to: Be prepared to hate it, MI-Roger [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 24 Jun 2015 03:32:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A better title, assuming it would fit within the box, would have been "Be prepared for the possibility that you may hate it".
Besides the two examples I cited, my sister's husband's sister's daughter (niece-in-law?) moved to Hawaii with her husband about five years ago after his boss visited the islands and noticed there was a glaring void for the services his business offered. The niece-in-law and her husband are both around 30 now and seem to enjoy living in the islands from conversations with family.
Moving to a warm weather climate a 4-hour flight from home could be quite different than moving to a warm weather locale that is a 4-hour flight AND a 12-hour flight from family and friends.
My wife and I discovered we loved the Raleigh area during the time our youngest lived there. Everyone has heard of the Snow-birds that move from the North to Florida in the winter. North Carolina has a group of retirees who are jokingly called "Half-backs". They are retirees who moved to Florida from the North-east, discovered they missed the seasonal changes, or were too far from family, or both, and moved half-way back to the North-east and settled in the Carolinas.
A big change can be pleasant or it can be very unpleasant. Check out city-data forums and read what recent arrivers to Hawaii have posted.
