I'm a little late reading this, but my answer is it depends on the car. I feel the hitch rack works better with wagon or suv than sedan, and it can be a lot of weight on a lever arm hanging off the rear suspension. We have an ultralight yakima hitch rack for 3 bikes on a 9-5 sedan and we definitely sag the back and have had the bottom of it touch pavement several times (slope tranisitions into driveways etc).
I would recommend something like Thule side arm or Yakima high roller or similar if you can lift the bike up onto the roof. Taking wheels off is a pain, and it's worth buying a good rack, not a cheapie.
Don't drive into the garage - I've done it before (luckily the only damage was to the rack, not the bikes or car), but I suspect you are smarter than me!
