Last summer I bought a Thule roof-mounted carrier that grabs the front wheel (Sidearm model). Pretty simple to use and it works on my mtn and road bikes. This model probably wouldn't work if you rock fenders on your bike. I wanted something that didn't need the front wheel removed (carbon fork road bike/thru axle fork mtn bike), and didn't clamp on the downtube (thinwall aluminum/paint damage); I already had a set of Saab/Thule bars and no receiver. There is a comparable Yakima model and I compared the two, but for some reason I chose the Thule model- I don't remember why.
There are some videos on youtube that show the loading process.
Garage door opener goes into the glove box when the bike is on the roof.
