I have seen many late model Japanese sedans (NYC area) and coupes with severe negative camber, especially in the rear. In addition, they seem to run smaller diameter aftermarket wheels than stock with tires that are too narrow for the wheel width, resulting in a stressed sidewall. The rear tires might be 9 inches wide, but only maybe one third of the tread bearing the weight of the car.
It is an odd, unsafe look that I thought was part of the drifting craze, but I'm seeing this on front wheel drive cars which does not make sense. I know that if they cut or put shorter springs in to lower the car, it aggravates negative camber on an independent suspension, but I can't understand what the goal is.
Having dealt with the tire devouring temperament of negative rear camber on my stock 1999 Viggen a few years back, I don't get this, tires are not cheap, so what gives?
