Malwarebytes is a good product, free version scans on demand and removes malware. You might want to use tdsskiller from Kaspersky to check for root kits. Combofix is very good, but is an industrial-strength program without fancy graphics that is not very user-friendly. Hitman Pro is a "second opinion" scanner that checks for stuff the others might leave behind. (The 30-day trial can remove baddies that it may find.) As has been mentioned Ad-Aware is also very good. No one program will find everything, it's best to use 2 or 3.
You could also download Kaspersky or BitDefender rescue discs to scan the hard drive from a clean operating system before letting Windows 7 connect to the net.
The chances that the router has been compromised are pretty slim. There are a few viruses in the wild that will attack certain routers but they are rare.
