We got a 9-5 to complement a couple c900s, and as a better long distance family hauler. It is true that the older SAABs are disappearing due to wear and tear up here in the rust belt anyway, and that makes it sometimes more difficult to do timely "unscheduled" maintenance, particularly away from home. The 9-5 has been great (ours is a 2004 - I would actually suggest 2004 or newer, you can research on the 9-5 bb, but that is my preference). All 9-5's are cheap now. Parts however may someday be less available, so if you were looking at a newer still Volvo, that may be more "easy" going forward. Then again if you DIY, TSN is a great resource and the 9-5 is a great bargain car... If you live in an area without rust, the 9000 may be reasonable to keep running for a while still - they are quite durable and easy to maintain, probably more so than the 9-5 (or any new car, the 9-5 is not bad). BTW the 9-3ss seems to be quite trouble free as a model also, probably fewer issues than the 9-5, but it is smaller.
In general it is difficult to find something else that feels "right" after a SAAB. Very few cars out there interest me now (within a SAAB level of budget constraint anyway, Koenigsegg might be interesting, but...). The 9000 hatch is even harder to replace. Interesting options to me would be the Tesla S, and the Porsche Panamera... both costly... Audi has something with a hatch now and the BMW 4 series GT looks promising. Other than that, things like the Honda Crosstour may be a large hatch, but the SUV like stance is a shame... To be honest, as time goes on and as the prospect of new SAABs becomes more distant and existing models become too old, something like the Tesla S seems really appealing to me if it can get past the range anxiety phase.
Good luck!
