The items you mentioned are valid and were in the back of my mind but I didn't search for specific values via the internet when posting. We were touring colleges in Boston back in the '97 time frame and I was astounded to see billbords on Parking Garages advertising monthly parking fees "As Low as $350 per Month!" For a parking spot which would be free in Detroit - sporting event excluded.

Truthfully, I initially thought the ads were prices for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in an attached building. It was only after I noticed there were no apartment buildings attached to these parking garages that the light bulb went on.

Our kids are moving this month from DC to Boston. They will be reducing their rent by $600 per month but it is still more than double our mortgage payment in greater Detroit. Rapid transit in DC cost them around $140/month for the pass our son used commuting to his job about 1-1/2 miles away, his wife worked from home quite a bit to reduce their commuting costs.
