Actually, most peole would be surprised. Go to a huge aviation convention like Sun n' Fun in Florida or Airventure in Wisconsin and talk with pilots. I mean pilots of Cessna 172's and Piper Archers, old Bonanzas from the 1960's, and the like. You'll be shocked to find that many of them make less money than you do (if they're willing to tell you, which they won't be, if you come at them with the assertion that they're rich). How do they do it? Doesn't a Cessna 172 cost, like, a million dollars? And another million a year to fly it?
So, if you're willing to do the legwork, you'll find out all kind of interesting things. I've been to Oshkosh something like 6 times, and I believe that at least half of Americans are able to get off the ground in some fashion, at some price point. It may be an ultralight, but if your goal is to see the ground from above, it can be done.
