Parts car, when is it an ok buy?

Some 9-5s are going for such low prices that they could be good as parts cars. It seems the ideal scenario is an exact match (e.g., ext/int color and body style) with a known issue that affects a limited subset of parts (e.g., blown transmission). The analysis gets more complex for rougher cars. Even simple things like wheels aren't simple as they tend to have either bad curb rash or large rim bends. The car I'm looking at can't key on and even if that could be fixed is rough in certain ways (interior worn and damaged from past water plus some of the trim and mechanics overly fiddled with meaning lots of broken bits). The upside is some new parts: turbo and performance exhaust bits. Getting it towed, parting it, etc. could be a hassle. I'm not ready to use many parts now but perhaps at some point. Buying parts piecemeal adds up. It's tough to compete with the pros in terms of selling parts. It would be mostly for my use. I don't really have a place to park it and let it just sit. I don't live near any self serve junkyards. Local people parting cars are overcharging and can be hard to deal with.
