One of Chrysler's motivations for turbocharging in the 1980s was a lack of V6 engines, which at the time were being supplied by Mitsubishi. They could not obtain a sufficient quantity of V6 engines to meet demand so resorted to offering turbocharged 4-bangers for customers who wanted more power. This led to things like turbocharged 1980s minivans.
