Well, actually I mostly agree with what you are saying in terms of it depends on what and how you are watching/listening... and that getting too caught up in today standards and future-proofing is not likely to make a better system...
I think it makes sense to stay flexible on the source end, and even processing. This stuff keeps changing. Otoh, there is really no point in changing speakers, amplification, etc every 3 years if you choose well. Most of the cheap AV stuff is gimmicks with low quality audio electronics. They make money selling you on features. My bias is on the high end sound component of this, but great audio fidelity makes a huge difference! Personally I'd rather have 2 fantastic audio channels (even for movies) than 5+ mediocre ones. Imho, it's hard to get 2 fantastic channels for $1000, even used... If one is on a tighter budget, Cambridge Audio is not a bad option with some decent little integrated amps (they make AV receivers also, but relatively costly)... NAD also has made some decent sounding amplification over the years for the cost conscious, and their AV receivers are pretty affordable. Worth a listen.
I suppose I am no help here! However, it is wise to ask oneself what % of the time you'll use this for movies vs music etc. and then purchase accordingly. I think it is good to take the time to listen to complete systems you are considering with your own music, so you can judge for yourself... If you really enjoy music and have never done so, it is worth getting a chance to listen to a much higher quality, even just 2 channel system (like at a purist audiophile shop - eg if you have a local Naim dealer or whatnot). Much of the population has no idea how good well recorded music can sound when played through great equipment - where you close your eyes and it's like there is no equipment at all.
