I'm sorry if I came across a little strong... but I really think it depends a lot on your circumstances.
In my case, almost everything I use a transportation device for, a car does better than a bicycle. A bike definitely can be more enjoyable and healthier... but only if the conditions are right. Throw in some bad weather, dangerous traffic situations, lack of time, or the need to carry more than a bike can practically carry, and the bike becomes impractical.
And I experience circumstances like that quite frequently. If I lived in a moderate climate, worked near home (or far with a nice commute), and didn't have much to bring back from the grocery store, things would be different. But I suspect people who are able to use a bike for their primary transportation are a minority.
I actually have a friend who *has* to use a bicycle as his primary mode of transportation, as he is not able to drive due to a medical condition. He's in great shape and utilizes the bike well, but it still severely limits his choice of where he can work, what social and other events he can participate in, and many other things.
