Hi All -
I need some advise from the TSN brain trust. I have noticed that there has been a 1998 900SE sitting, unmoved, in the parking lot of the local Lowe's for several months (at least 4 months, probably more).
Last week I talked to the Lowe's manager and he said they have no immediate plans to do anything about it. They have called the local sheriff and they told Lowe's that the car has not been reported stolen. I also ran the VIN on various web sites and none indicated it as being stolen.
It has expired Washington state plates (I'm in San Diego, CA) so I filled out a WA State Department of Licensing vehicle record request to try and get the contact information for the current owner. My request was denied due to privacy restrictions which I fully understand, but it was worth a try.
I also contacted the sheriff about it and they said they probably won't do anything (i.e., tow, impound, contact owner, auction/scrap...) unless Lowe's requests it.
So, ideally I'd like to just find out who the owner is and ask if they want to sell the car. I'm not sure I want to go down the path of acquiring the car through a public auction and then find out there are some giant fees associated with the car.
Any ideas on how I might be able to, legally :-), locate the owner of the vehicle before it is towed, short of hiring a Private Investigator?
Thanks -
Alan
