Seeking info on a Saab Pike's Peak car Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 29 Jan 2016 03:32:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This car is actually a strong reason why I bought my first Saab back in 2000.
I saw the car at the GM Powertrain Transmission Engineering Center in Ypsilanti MI when I was working at the co-located manufacturing plant there. I transferred out of that location Sept 1, 1999 so I obviously saw the car prior to that date.
I don't think the car was a temporary static display, but rather was there for some development work. Although there was some type of informational sign identifying the car and its HP.
The engine was mounted longitudinally on the right hand side, inside the passenger compartment. The half shafts went fore and aft to differentials providing 4-wheel drive.
I believe the horepower number was 750HP or higher from the Saab 4-cylinder engine. This might have been on a hand lettered sign from a mechanic to avoid too many questions rather than a formal placard.
The car was red, which is only relevant when scanning sheets of Pike's Peak photos trying to find the car.
It couldn't have been Per Eklund's 2000 car as the time windoe isn't right. It may have been a 1999, 1998, or 1997 entry. It was obviously an Unlimited or Open Class car based on engine location and modified drive train.
Anyone know what this car was? This isn't a quiz, I am just trying to learn more about the car.
Thanks,
