OT: $100,000 College Scholarship for HS Juniors Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Tue, 8 Mar 2016 16:41:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York, where I earned my Masters Degree through their Distance Learning Program, offers a Rensselaer Medal Scholarship to one Junior Class member from each participating High School in the country. Each participating High School will receive the student nomination packet in mid-March (per the RPI web site) and must notify RPI with their selected student's name by May 1st. The High Schools each nominate one student but the award is funded by the college.
RPI is the oldest Engineering and Technical College in the US and was ranked in the top 5 engineering schools in 2014 by US News & World Report. In addition to the usual assortment of engineering and science degrees they also offer Pre-Law, Pre-Med, Architecture, Computers, Economics, and other rigorous degree programs.
I won't lie, the list price for RPI is still expensive after the scholarship amount is applied but my Niece, who was nominated for the Medal Scholarship from her HS in 2006, was offered a sweetened deal of full tuition paid, travel for two trips back to the Detroit area each year, and maybe a housing allowance too (my sister was a little uncertain on this recently).
There are 13 high schools in my county who participate in this program but typically only one or two of them award the scholarship each year! If you know a HS Junior who plans to study a technical field, and thinks they would like a traditional small college environment, tell them to research this scholarship and RPI quickly. If their school does not participate they can request the school become part of the Medal Scholarship program. First year High Schools can award a scholarship to one HS Senior in the Fall, all subsequent nominations must be to Juniors in the Spring.
Tell such a Junior Class student to do an internet search for Rensselaer Medal Scholarship and maybe save their parents $100,000!
The direct link below may or may not work, an internet search will easily find the scholarship page.
Note; I edited title to eliminate potential confusion with Junior Colleges. I didn't notice that last night.
