4 cylinder turbos are not just a GM thing these days, nor was it ever just a Saab thing. A number of mainstream manufactures today offer 4 cylinder turbos and many premium and luxury manufacturers also offer the option of a V6 too. I don't see anything wrong with GM having wanted Saab to offer both to its customers, especially years ago.
I think 4 cylinder turbos are just the natural direction the market has been going, thanks to increasing fuel economy requirements, more than a reflection of or learning from what Saab may have done. Heck, Chrysler Corporation offered 4 cylinder turbos in many of its models way back in the 1980s including its luxury New Yorker and TC.
GM was offering turbos even before Saab did.
